Description:
Love language? So do we, and our mission is to infuse AI with that same love.
At Surge, we're building the human infrastructure to power modern language models — from detecting hate speech, to training models to write code, to injecting human values into the next wave of language models. Our first product is a platform that helps ML teams create amazing, human-powered datasets to train AI in the richness of language.

The Role
As a member of the Data Operations team, you'll be the main point of contact for some of our key accounts. You'll get to know their teams and understand their unique goals and challenges through a linguistic lens. Then you'll work with our internal experts to deliver amazing quality data, incredibly fast. You’ll own our data factory, end-to-end, designing project interfaces, assembling teams, controlling quality systems, and managing costs. This role is a key part of how we deliver value to our customers.
The best part is you'll have a real voice in shaping our operations as you help build the engine that powers our business. You'll get to work closely with engineers, data scientists, and fellow linguists to build innovative solutions.
As a member of the Data Operations team, you’ll:
- Engage with customers and make sure they’re having a great experience. You’ll work with them to understand their SLAs and goals, and leverage your linguistic expertise to run amazing data delivery projects that meet & exceed their needs.
- Deliver amazing quality data, manage throughput, and monitor costs.
- Design, run, & optimize projects, and analyze their results.
- Train, manage, and support teams of workers on the platform.
- Gather insights and deliver them to our customers clearly and accessibly.
- Help find new opportunities within accounts. Introduce Surge to other teams and build strong relationships.

Some Examples of Problems We're Solving
- We help train modern language models to understand the richness and nuance of language. How would you design a project to collect the data to improve the creativity of a response without being overly verbose?
- We teach modern search engines to return the most useful and relevant results. What’s the most relevant result for a query like “for loop syntax”? What sort of considerations would you need to make? How would you judge the results with the most authority?
- We create data sets that are used to evaluate the performance of language models along various dimensions. How would you design a data set to be sufficiently relevant, diverse, and balanced?
We’re looking for people who are analytical, detail oriented, and skilled at optimizing complex systems. If this sounds like you, please email **[email protected]** with a resume, a link to your LinkedIn profile, and 2-3 sentences describing your interest in Surge. We love personal projects and pieces of writing, too!
