Calling linguists and lovers of language and writing, especially those of you in South Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand/Aotearoa!
Just a few days left to sign up for the Eastern Hemisphere edition of the Writing Beyond Writing Book Club, which kicks off on Sunday, March 3.
The Western Hemisphere edition kicked off a week and a half ago with a "fascinating" and "inspiring" discussion that ranged through embroidered poetry; fonts based on one’s own handwriting; low-energy and high-energy writing systems; Hungarian runic script redesigned as Netflix logos; the burning of books to establish a script to unify an empire; Latin manuscripts containing paintings, poems and puzzles; decrypting Stonehenge; and Mesoamerican codices that repeated the names of gods so the universe would not come to an end.
It was a blast, and I can pretty much guarantee that the Eastern Hemisphere group will cover an entirely different but equally fascinating range of topics.
