Job Location: Prague, Czech Republic
Job Title: Post-Doc in Empirical and Theoretical Linguistics
Job Rank: Post Doc, Researcher

Specialty Areas: Morphology; Pragmatics; Semantics; Syntax

Description:

The Faculty of Arts, Charles University, is recruiting a full-time post-doc in linguistics (holding a PhD or an equivalent degree) for the duration of 36 months, starting no later than January 2026 (earlier start negotiable). The successful applicant is expected to carry out independent and collaborative theoretical and empirical research in the broad topical area “Theories of mental lexicon”, focusing preferentially (but not necessarily) on the interface between mental lexicon and word order (PI: Radek Šimík). The position is couched within a broader project consortium entitled “A lifetime with language: the nature and ontogeny of linguistic communication” (CZ.02.01.01/00/23_025/0008726, co-funded by the European Union), involving four institutions across Czechia.

Possible research topics include
- verb semantics, argument structure, and their effect on constituent order;
- nominal semantics and its effect on constituent order;
- argument order and order alternations within and outside the VP;
- word order in the functional/left-peripheral domains;
- multi-factorial and quantitative approaches to word order.

The research topics can be approached from a variety of perspectives; solid theoretical background and experience with quantitative empirical methods (experimental, corpus) are desirable. The particular theoretical background of the applicant is not decisive, but interest in theoretical issues and framework comparison/integration are welcome.

The successful applicant will be expected to work independently and to collaborate with the PI (Radek Šimík), a PhD student, and an undergraduate student assistant in the project, and optionally other senior and junior members of the broader project group at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University. Maintaining and further developing international research ties is desirable. The applicant is expected to carry out research and disseminate the results at prestigious conferences and high-profile journals. The applicant will receive advisory and administrative support in applying for follow-up funding. Teaching is not envisaged as part of the job, but the applicant will have an opportunity to offer topical seminars as per her/his preference.

The successful candidate will hold the VP2 position („vědecký pracovník 2“). The salary will be between 55 and 70 thousand CZK/month (before tax), depending on experience.
