I am pleased to announce the upcoming one-day symposium at Maynooth University, Ireland on 5th June 2025: "Challenging Gendered Discourses on Academic Disciplines".

While the event is open to all colleagues interested in the discursive gendering of any academic discipline, and the impact of this on university participation patterns, the event is organised by the research team of Gender Equality in Language Studies (GELS) and will have a strong focus on discursive gendering and gendered associations with learning Modern Foreign Languages and Irish in post-primary schools and studying them at university level.

I'm the Principal Investigator on the project and I'm extremely eager to report on its findings and recommendations which are likely to inform the continued tireless efforts to grow MFL learning at university level in Ireland, and elsewhere.

There will be a further communications in due course regarding the Call for Papers and registration for the event, which is supported by the research project funder, the Higher Education Authority (HEA) of Ireland.
