Description:
The University of Montreal (Canada), in collaboration with Macquarie University (Australia), is recruiting a PhD student for a SSHRC-funded project on the cognitive and linguistic mechanisms underlying reading development and difficulties in bilingual children. The project combines the Dual-Route Cascaded model of reading with Bayesian computational modeling and cross-orthographic analyses to explore the interplay between cognitive processes and language experience in typical and atypical readers.
The ideal applicant will have a background in cognitive science, speech-language pathology, psychology, linguistics, or a related discipline. Desired qualifications include experience with experimental design, data analysis (e.g., R or Python), and a strong interest in bilingualism, reading development, and/or computational modeling. Familiarity with Bayesian methods or cross-linguistic research is a plus.
The student will be based at the CHU Sainte-Justine Research Center (University of Montreal) and will have the opportunity to apply to the Cotutelle/Joint PhD program with Macquarie University, enabling a minimum one-year research stay in Sydney and the completion of a dual PhD degree. The position includes guaranteed funding of $24,000 CAD per year in accordance with institutional guidelines. The expected start date is Fall 2025, with a possible alternative start in Winter 2026.
