Description:
The University of Stavanger invites applicants for two positions as Postdoctoral Fellow in the History of English Language / Corpus Linguistics at the Faculty of Arts and Education, Department of Cultural Studies and Languages. The positions are vacant from 1 January 2026. The Fellows will be affiliated with the ERC-funded project LiTra (Linguistic Traces: low-frequency forms as evidence of language and population history). The Fellows are employed for a period of 4 years.
The Postdoctoral Fellow must have a doctoral degree with a specialisation relevant for the project. The doctoral thesis must have been submitted for evaluation within the application deadline for the position and approved before accession.
The two Postdoctoral Fellows will ideally have complementary skill sets and roles within the project. Fellow 1 should have solid experience and knowledge within historical corpus linguistics, together with a high degree of technological competence, including programming and database skills. They should be able to make informed decisions in choosing and testing tools for the project, and also to develop new tools and methodologies as needed. Fellow 2 should have a solid background in the history of English as well as experience in working with medieval/early modern manuscript texts, preferably administrative documents. They will, together with the project leader, play a central role in preparing and compiling a corpus of medieval documentary texts.
Both Fellows will in addition carry out a self-contained linguistic project within the LiTra framework. They should therefore have a good basis in linguistics, as well as research interests within one or more areas of the History of English, such as syntax, morphology, lexicology and/or phonology. Applicants should submit a description of their proposed research project. The project should contribute to the main empirical aim of LiTra: to relate geographical variation in minority forms to earlier language and dialect contact in England. Please contact project leader Merja Stenroos for a description of the LiTra project!
The project will be carried out at the University of Stavanger. It is assumed that the appointees will work full time on the project and that they will participate in the academic community.
