Description:

The following position is available in the newly established Collaborative Research Center 1718 “Common Ground: Cognition – Grammar – Communication” (funded by the German Research Foundation, DFG) at the University of Tübingen.

PhD Researcher in Linguistics (m/f/d, E13 TV-L, 75%)

The position begins 1st October 2025 (or shortly after) and ends 30th June 2029.

The position is within project A3 “Common Ground Make-Up: Attitudes and Types of Propositional Information” with project leader Kalle Müller (German Department). The aim of the project is to empirically investigate and linguistically model the effects of uncertain information on the common ground. In particular, it studies the role and effect of epistemic and evidential marking and seeks to explore the viability of alternative, non-Stalnakerian models of Common Ground.

Topics of concern are for example:
- How do attitudes vary across different discourse participants and across different pieces of information?
- How are discourse participants’ beliefs effected by different marking of information quality?
- What is the role of non-at-issueness for information typing?

The candidate should have finished their Masters degree in a related field of Linguistics by the start date of the project. They are expected to be fluent in German and English. Experience in experimental and/or corpus work is welcome. The project leader will guide the research, and offer frequent support, advice, and consultation. The CRC offers an exceptionally rich research environment with excellent opportunities to work together with many other linguists on topics across the field, exchange with many other PhD students, and methodological support. These posts therefore offer the ideal entry point to an academic career in linguistics.

Your application can be submitted in German or English and should consist of the master’s thesis (if not completed, parts of it), a short motivation letter, a tabular CV, copies of your degree and university certificates. If you have potential referees, please include their contacts. The deadline for submitting applications is 20 July 2025. Please include the keyword “informationtype” in your application email. If you have any questions prior to submitting the application, please contact the project leader.

Interviews with potential candidates are conducted as soon as possible.

The University of Tübingen is committed to equity and diversity and actively promotes equal opportunities. The University of Tübingen seeks to raise the number of women in research and teaching and therefore urges suitable qualified women academics to apply for this position. The employment will be handled by the central administration of the University of Tübingen.
