Job Location: USA
Job Title: Assistant Professor in Computational Linguistics and AI
Job Rank: Assistant Professor

Specialty Areas: General Linguistics

Description:

The Linguistics Program in the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Carolina (USC) invites applications for a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track position in Computational Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 16, 2026. This interdisciplinary joint hire (with the home department to be determined based on candidate’s specialization) will be part of a university-wide cluster hire in Data Sciences, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Cyber security and aims to support cutting-edge research at the intersection of AI and Linguistics.

We seek applicants who will have a Ph.D. in Linguistics or closely linked discipline with linguistics training by August 15, 2026. We particularly welcome applicants whose research agenda in Linguistics employs computational methods and whose work includes or leverages Large Language Models (LLMs). Successful candidates may also specialize in natural language processing (NLP) and/or machine learning or may investigate other aspects of AI and language science.
The successful candidate must have and maintain an active program of research and demonstrate the potential for securing extramural funding as well as excellence in teaching and mentorship. The candidate must be a dynamic educator willing to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses serving their area of specialization and Linguistics generally, with a typical teaching load of two courses per semester. They will also be expected to mentor graduate students in linguistics and participate in service to the broader USC community.
The Linguistics Program offers collaborative strength across phonetics, syntax, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics and language acquisition, as well as a strong graduate training program, providing an ideal environment for cross-disciplinary mentorship and research. The Linguistics Program is highly committed to both undergraduate and graduate instruction and mentoring, offering an undergraduate linguistics minor, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Linguistics. Information about the Program, its faculty and graduate students, and its courses and curricula is available here: https://sc.edu/study/colleges_schools/artsandsciences/linguistics/

Applicants should apply online at USCJobs at https://uscjobs.sc.edu/postings/193754 and must include (1) a cover letter that discusses research interests and teaching experience, (2) a Curriculum Vitae, and (3) contact information for three references. Writing samples from selected applicants will be requested after a preliminary screening, as will letters of reference and graduate transcripts for applicants who advance to semi-finalist status. (If a candidate has not yet defended their dissertation, a letter from their dissertation director will need to confirm that the PhD will be granted before the start of employment).
Review of applications will begin on October 15, 2025 and continue until the position is filled. Inquiries about this position may be directed to the Search Committee Chair, Stanley Dubinsky [email protected].
