Description:
The School of Teacher Education at the Florida State University invites applications to the Second Language Education Ph.D. program.
Our program offers a strong foundation in theoretical and instructional approaches to second language learning. Graduates are equipped to investigate how additional languages are learned, used, and taught across diverse contexts. Within a top-10 public college of education, students benefit from a vibrant scholarly community, individualized research pathways, and access to cutting-edge resources and support for educational research. With close faculty mentorship and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration across Anne’s College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, students develop the skills to conduct original scholarship that makes a lasting impact and bridges research with practice.
Faculty:
Carlo Cinaglia (language learner and teacher identity, investment, and emotions; ethnography, discourse analysis, narrative inquiry)
Phil Hiver (individual differences; task-based instruction and next-gen L2 pedagogy; metascience, mixed methods research, and complex dynamic systems)
Mostafa Papi (individual differences in L2 learning motivation, psychology and behavior; task engagement, proactive language learning)
Amy S. Thompson (individual differences, motivation, anxiety, self-confidence, identity, gender, multilingual language instructors/NNSTs, nativespeakerism, leadership in higher education)
Students accepted to the SLE Doctoral program typically receive a four-year funding package including a full tuition waiver and a competitive stipend.
