Linguistic Field(s): Translation

Call Deadline: 05-Jan-2026

Call for Papers:

The Translation in Transition conference series has served as a meeting site for empirical translation scholars for over ten years now. After seven successful editions of this conference series, the tradition will be continued with the 8th edition taking place in 2026 in Aachen, where a special focus will be on translation and interpreting at the intersection of various multilingual text production contexts. In keeping with tradition, the conference will make room for discussion of all strands of empirical research in translation and interpreting studies (TIS). In addition to this, the 2026 edition will host a workshop on the topic of transfer from TIS into other fields both within and outside of academia in cooperation with the newly founded Institute of Translatology.

Keynote Speakers:
Gaëtanelle Gilquin, UCLouvain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium
Marta Kajzer-Wietrzny, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, Poland
Jean Nitzke, University of Agder, Kristiansand, Norway

Submission is now open! Please visit the conference website to find the venue on OpenReview and submit your abstract as a PDF by January 5. We invite submissions reporting original empirical studies (including multi-methods approaches) on one or more of the topics below, though the following list is by no means exhaustive:
- Different types of bilingual text production (including AI-based language generation)
- Constrained communication
- Directionality and L2 writing
- Indirect translation and interpreting
- Cognitive processing during translation and interpreting
- Translationese and specific properties of translation and interpreting
- MT post-editing types, practices, ethics
- Audiovisual translation
- Register or genre variation
- Quality assessment
- Workflow studies
- The role of external agents (e.g. editors, GenAI-based agents)

We also welcome methodological contributions that reflect on (established) research paradigms or that make proposals towards the establishment of reproducible paradigms in empirical TIS.
The official language of the conference is English.
