In the forthcoming winter semester 2025/2026, the Class of Language at the Graduate School of Language & Literature, Munich is offering one GSSP PhD-Scholarship (DAAD), as well as additional non-funded positions in our PhD program.
The DAAD-scholarship includes: scholarship payments of currently € 1,300 a month, a travel allowance; payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover; a research allowance of currently between € 460 - € 260 per year
Application deadline: April 1st, 2025.
Doctoral students in the Class of Language at LMU Munich benefit from excellent conditions, including a research-oriented and systematically structured interdisciplinary teaching program, as well as individual and intensive supervision by professors from various linguistic disciplines. Members of the Class of Language also profit from diverse opportunities for academic exchange between doctoral students, professors, and international guests, as well as from the provision of key qualifications and financial support (e.g. for research or conference trips). Doctoral students in the Class of Language also have excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary cooperation with doctoral peers from the Class of Language Education, the Class of Literature, or the Class of Culture and History, all of which are also embedded in the Graduate School Language & Literature Munich.
Applicants are expected to provide a convincing project outline, an above-average university degree (state examination, state board examination, Magister Artium, diploma, Master of Arts, Maîtrise, Laurea, etc.) in a linguistic discipline, teamwork skills, willingness to actively participate in the class, and adequate knowledge of at least two European scientific languages, including preferably German.
DAAD scholarships are exclusively for international applicants who must have completed their degree (see above) at the starting date of the scholarship/preparatory German course. Applicants must not have been residing in Germany for more than fifteen months prior on May, 1st 2025. Applicants should not have graduated any longer than six years before May, 1st 2025 and not have completed a PhD previously. Research phases outside Germany during the funding period can be supported if they do not exceed 25% of the total funding period, and do not take place directly at the beginning of the funding period.
Applications from developing countries and emerging nations are particularly welcome.
Kindly specify in your application whether you are solely interested in the funded scholarship or if you are also open to non-funded PhD positions. The Class of Language is committed to assisting its members in securing alternative funding.
