Focus:

Focusing on discourses and identity in an international and interdisciplinary context, the Summer School 2025 (10-11th June) of the LiRiC Interdisciplinary Thematic Institute (Language, Inclusion, Remediation, Interculturality, Communication) aims to provide a forum for discussion and reflection open to all.
LiRiC addresses the issue of inclusion through language and communication of vulnerable individuals and communities (e.g. LGBTQIA+, the elderly or people with language disorders, migrants, speakers of poorly endowed languages, bilingual or plurilingual pupils) in a variety of situations (school, interactions, social networks, in the medical field, etc.). The 2025 summer school will provide an opportunity to study interdisciplinary and conceptual constructions of identity in relation to the three research areas of the LiRiC ITI: inclusion and health, inclusion and education, inclusion and society.

Description:

Communication plays an essential role in the construction and assertion of identities, whether individual or collective. It is a fundamental tool for establishing connections between individuals, transcending cultural and social differences or, on the contrary, underlining them, and reinforcing the feeling of belonging to a group.
Language is a central element in these dynamics of communication around identities, and can help to erase the boundaries between groups and individuals, between different communities, or, on the contrary, become a factor of exclusion in certain situations (i.a. language disorders, inappropriate communication, identity claims, discrimination).
Finally, discourse is the space in which identities are constructed/performed/embodied by individuals, in interaction with others and in response to both local and more global contexts. Thus, language is not simply a tool of expression: it becomes a vehicle for cohesion or division, depending on the context and the way in which it is used. At the same time, discourse is the site where identities and the power relations that constitute them are shaped, reproduced and negotiated.

The summer school will be organized as follows:
a) sessions for theoretical lectures by internationally renowned researchers in the fields covered by LiRiC;
b) workshops focusing on methodology and research practice for training purposes;
c) poster sessions on theoretical, methodological or empirical data;
d) A round table on ‘Building interdisciplinarity’.

Theoretical lectures will shed light on the question of identity and gender, the opposition between social and national identities, inter-group relations and the impact of social cognition. These lectures will alternate with workshops designed to discuss the methodological aspects of data exploitation and analysis. The workshops will provide master’s and doctoral students, as well as more advanced researchers, with training in the collection and analysis of data from a variety of fields. Poster sessions preceded by a one-minute presentation in plenary session will also be part of the program. A round table on the construction of interdisciplinarity will enhance the discussions.
The LiRiC summer school will encourage dialogue between young researchers (master’s/doctorate) and advanced researchers in a supportive atmosphere around theoretical and methodological questions on the study of the links between language and identity.

It will be possible to take part in the summer school with or without a poster presentation. The languages of the Summer School are French and English.

Financial Aid Applications accepted until 01-Apr-2025

The best poster proposals will be awarded a grant to facilitate participation by covering part of the expenses of doctoral students from outside the University of Strasbourg. Meal expenses will be covered by the organizers of the summer school.

Call for posters
Send a one-page abstract (including references) of the proposed content, together with a brief presentation (max. one page) of the thesis related to at least one of the 3 LiRiC axes (available here www.liric.unistra.fr) or related to the theme of identity. The summary may focus on tools for collecting and/or exploiting a corpus or on methodological issues (submissions between March 11 and April 1st 2025).

Call for participation (without poster):

Master’s students or doctoral students internal/external to the University of Strasbourg: send a proposal for participation in the summer school explaining the candidate’s interest (submissions between March 11th and April 1st 2025).
Participants in the summer school will receive a certificate of attendance. Master’s students, on request, will be awarded 1 ECTS (without poster) and 3 ECTS (with poster). These credits may be included in a diploma supplement at the student’s request, subject to acceptance by their University/Faculty.
