Our Corpus Linguistics Summer School aims to equip participants with critical expertise in both the theory and practice of corpus-based linguistic research. Over five days, participants will engage in two types of sessions. First, hands-on sessions will focus on developing practical skills for extracting and analysing different types of corpus data, and applying this knowledge to specific research projects. Second, participants will learn about current corpus research from our team.

• Analysing healthcare data using corpus linguistics
• Analysing learner language
• Analysing text with Python and SpaCy
• Corpus triangulation
• Fake news
• Introduction to R and tidyverse
• Introduction to Sketch Engine

• Sign language corpora

• Topic models
• UAM CorpusTool
• Understanding child language and literacy development

The Centre for Corpus Research at the University of Birmingham is pleased to announce that our Corpus Linguistics Summer School will be held in person at the University of Birmingham Edgbaston campus from 7 to 11 July 2025.

Attendance is open to all on a first-come-first-served basis upon completion of the registration process (including payment) through the university’s online shop linked from the above website.
Registration fee: £230 (£180 for students)
Speakers:
This year, our participants will have the pleasure to hear contributions by Joyce Lim (Aston University), as well as members of our local staff of corpus linguistics, including Alex Christiansen, Matteo Fuoli, Jason Grafmiller, Jack Grieve, Nicholas Groom, Yaling Hsiao, Sofia Malamatidou, Akira Murakami, Michael Oakes, Adam Schembri, Paul Thompson, Katharine Weetman, and Bodo Winter, among others.
The annual Sinclair Lecture will also take place during the summer school. The details will be announced closer to the date.
Corpus Linguistics 2025
The week before the summer school, the 13th international Corpus Linguistics conference (CL2025) will take place in Birmingham. If you are coming to Birmingham for the summer school, we encourage you to consider attending CL2025 as well!
