Meeting Description:
After the very successful HLAW 1 at the University of Lisbon in 2022, the Heritage Languages Around the World 2 (HLAW2) conference will be held at the University of Massachusetts Amherst from May 29th to 31st, 2024. This is a joint initiative of the Portuguese and Brazilian Studies Program and the Hispanic Linguistics Program at UMass Amherst together with the Centro de Linguística da Universidade de Lisboa, the Centro de Estudos Humanísticos da Universidade do Minho, and the Portuguese Program at UMass Dartmouth. This initiative is also supported by Camões Institute through the Lídia Jorge Chair in Portuguese Studies at UMass Amherst.
We welcome submissions on the following areas:
- Linguistic properties of heritage languages in child and adult bilinguals
- The role of input and cross-linguistic influence in heritage language acquisition
- Research methods in heritage language development
- Understudied heritage languages (e.g. Native American, African and Asian languages)
- New trends in heritage language education
- Heritage language policies
- Attitudes and identity in heritage languages
- Heritage languages and the preservation of linguistic diversity
Call for Papers:
Abstracts for 20-minute oral presentations or posters in one of the 8 areas listed below will be accepted from August 31st to December 1st, 2023. Abstracts should be written in English, should be a maximum of 500 words (not including references or title) and anonymized to exclude any identifiable information. Authors may submit a total of two abstracts, one individual and one joint.
