Meeting Description:

The 10th conference Modern Greek Dialects and Linguistics Theory continues the tradition of past events for the promotion of linguistic research on Modern Greek dialects.

As opposed to other languages (e.g. Romance) and their dialects, Modern Greek dialects are less known among linguists, yet these dialects exhibit a bewildering variety of phenomena due to the fact that many of them have developed in relative isolation (e.g. Tsakonian) or in contact-situations with other dialects and/or other languages (e.g. South Italian Greek). Modern Greek dialects offer a plethora of interesting or even intriguing data which can be used to test working hypotheses about language structure and language use and can be analysed in different ways, by appealing to various methods and theories developed in modern linguistics.

The aim of MGDLT10 is to highlight the importance of Modern Greek dialects for linguistic theory, promote the study of dialectal variation and contribute to the preservation of Greek linguistic heritage. In this context, on 12th October 2024, the conference will host a special theme section on the Greek dialects which are still spoken in Calabria and Salento, Italy.
