Description:

Within the Research Training Group (“Graduiertenkolleg“) Dimensions of Constructional Space located at Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg there is an opening of a 65% position (TV-L E13, 3 years) for a doctoral candidate in Arabic and/or Semitic linguistics.

The focus of the work consists in analyzing pattern of valency as well as phrasal verbs and preposition use in Arabic (and related Semitic languages) in the framework of or at least with significant reference to Construction Grammar. Successful candidates will have a solid background in Modern Standard and Classical Arabic, with additional insight into dialects, and preferably comparative knowledge of at least another Semitic language such as Hebrew, and hold a master degree in this field.

They will also have a good command of Theoretical Linguistics with a focus on syntax, and a sense for computational methods. Knowledge of interlinear glossing and transcription techniques is essential. During his/her tenure the candidate will work closely with Prof. Lutz Edzard and Prof. Thomas Herbst, as well as with the whole team of the Research Training Group (both Principal Investigators and fellow students) at FAU Erlangen.

Selection criteria:
- MA in linguistics;
- previous academic experience relevant to the project;
- ability to work independently and as part of a team;
- fluency in English
