Description:

The CRC 1646 is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and investigates linguistic creativity in communication from a range of different perspectives. This PhD-position is part of project B02 “Computational linguistic creativity in reference games between interactive dialogue agents" (PIs: Hendrik Buschmeier and Sina Zarrieß). In this project, we investigate when and how speakers develop creative strategies to solve joint tasks in dialogue, and how linguistic creativity can be implemented in dialogue agents equipped with language models. We will collect and analyse data from human participants playing iterated reference games. As our core tool for modelling linguistic creativity, we will develop computational models of language generation in dialogue that combine neural and symbolic reasoning, bringing together visually-grounded language models with dialogue models. The overall aim of the project is to study human-like computational linguistic creativity and human-machine co-creativity as it develops within and across dialogues. Your Tasks
Research tasks (95 %):
- research in project B02, focusing on systematic empirical analysis and computational modelling of reference strategies in dialogic interaction and partner-specific linguistic creativity; conducting experimental studies (online and in the lab); the research will ideally form the basis for further scientific qualification in the form of a PhD-thesis
- networking within the CRC
- active participation in the qualification program of the graduate school of the CRC
- presentation of project results at national and international conferences and contribution to project publications
Participation in the SFB organisation and self-administration (5 %)
Employment is conducive to scientific qualification.

Your Profile
We expect
- relevant, successfully completed academic degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in e. g. computational linguistics, linguistics or cognitive science
- experience of linguistic data analysis
- experience of formal, computational or statistical modelling
